Pop Propaganda

A collision of ideology and consumerism, Pop Propaganda reimagines Andy Warhol’s portraits of Chairman Mao and the Coca-Cola bottle, two of his most provocative symbols of power and influence. The juxtaposition is striking—Mao, once the face of Communist revolution, is now intertwined with an emblem of Western capitalism, blurring the lines between political iconography and commercial branding.

Diagonal slashes fragment the image, forcing the viewer to piece together a leader once synonymous with collectivism now holding a product of mass-market consumerism. Warhol’s signature halftone textures and bold color palette amplify the tension between state control and corporate influence, raising the question: Where does propaganda end and pop culture begin?

By merging political identity with commercial advertising, Pop Propaganda challenges the viewer to reconsider how figures of power—whether in politics or in branding—are commodified, replicated, and ultimately sold to the world.
